“The Back-Up Plan” Making the Most Valuable Plan-MVP
I know people and companies who spend a lot of time making plans, and then new plans, and maybe later another plan. Why waste the time and money, if you aren’t going to do anything with it? (But wait, a twist to this plan)
Einstein’s definition of “Insanity” is; “Doing the same thing, the same way, expecting a different result” How is making a plan which you don’t take action not insane? What is the plan you really should be considering? People and companies often get stuck in a rut of comfort, just because it seems to be working…so why change it. The old adage; “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it!” I will tell you why; as a business owner or executive, this can be the kiss of death! It won’t stay that way; competition, someone leaves, rules change, new laws, you loose a supplier, something will change.
If you aren’t thinking ahead, you’re already behind. Think of it this way; in football (the American kind, not soccer), the Coach has to always have a backup plan. At anytime one of his players can get hurt and is out of the game, often it is several of his players maybe on the same play. They always have a backup plan in place, which they practice and are ready to put into action within 40 seconds, the start of the next down. Is your company ready to react that quickly? What if Joe doesn’t show up for work today, or Joe and Sue? Heaven forbid they are both out for an extended period of time, and if these are your key people, do you have a backup plan? You loose a supplier, y o u r company insurance is cancelled, your attorney passes away…this is part of the responsibility of the Owner, CEO, Director, or the level which may be responsible for the company.
A few times a year, take a look at your company plan in a different way, and ask yourself what would you do if this person is taken out of the lineup? Are you prepared with backup vendors, do you have a vehicle or two with when it happens, you are prepared. This is the best action plan hopefully you will not have to take, and thank you for your valuable time.
The Owner is like a sports coach, you should always have an optional play ready to call! “The Back-Up Plan” Making the Most Valuable Plan-MVP
